Calculating the total value when given the average

Sometimes you may be given the average value of a set of items and asked to find the total value. You can calculate the total value by multiplying the average value by the number of items. Look at the examples below.

Example #1: The average weight of 5 boys is 80 pounds. What is the total weight of the 5 boys?

Total weight = average weight x number of boys

Total weight = 80 pounds x 5 = 400 pounds

Example #2: The average score of 11 batsmen in a cricket game is 24 runs. What is their total score?

Total score = average score x number of batsmen

Total score = 24 runs x 11 = 264 runs

Example #3: The average amount of money  Keshann earned each day for five days is $60. What is the total amount of money she earned?

Total amount of money earned = Average amount of money earned x number of days

Total amount of money earned = $60 x 5 = $300

Remember that total value = average x number of items
