Some drugs are legal drugs while others are illegal. It is important to know the difference.
What are legal drugs?
Legal drugs are drugs which can be bought, sold and used legally. This means it is not against the law to buy, sell or use them. Over the counter drugs and prescription drugs are legal drugs.
Tobacco, alcohol and caffeine are also legal drugs. However, they are not medicines.
What are illegal drugs?
Illegal drugs cannot be bought or sold legally. This means it is against the law to buy, sell or use these drugs. It is also against the law to transport these drugs from one place to another or to even have them in your home, your car, or even your pocket. People can be arrested, charged and sent to prison for buying, selling, transporting or just having any of these drugs. Examples of illegal drugs are cocaine, heroin, marijuana, LSD and methamphetamine (also called crystal meth or meth). Many of these drugs are quite dangerous and harmful to the body. Sometimes people get addicted to these drugs. This means that people find it very hard to stop taking them even if they wanted to. Look at the pictures of some illegal drugs below.
