Magnetic Materials

Magnetic materials

Some materials are attracted to magnets. These materials are usually made of metal or contain some amount of magnetic metal. Examples of metals that are attracted to magnets are:

  • Iron
  • Nickel
  • Cobalt

Steel is a metal which is attracted to magnets because it contains iron.

Non-magnetic materials

Not all metals are attracted to magnets. The examples below are some of the metals which are not attracted to magnets.

  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Copper
  • Aluminium

Many other everyday materials are not attracted to magnets. Here are some examples of materials which are not attracted to magnets.

  • Wood
  • Paper
  • Rubber
  • Plastic
  • Cloth
  • Glass

Here’s an idea. Get a magnet and see if you can find things around your home or class which are attracted to magnets. Then find things which are not attracted to magnets.
