Fertilization in plants

Fertilization is the fusion of the male and female gametes (sex cells). In this case we are talking about the male and female gametes of a plant.

How does fertilization happen in plants?

When a pollen grain is transferred from the anther of one flower to the stigma of the same or another flower this is called pollination. After pollination, the pollen grain grows a tube called a pollen tube through the style to the ovary of the flower.

The male gamete (sex cell) is transferred into the ovule of the flower where it fuses with the female gamete (sex cell) in the ovule. The fusion of the male and female gametes is known as fertilization. After fertilization, the ovules develop into seeds and the ovary develops into a fruit.

Look at the diagram of the flower below. Can you trace the path that the pollen tube would take to the ovule?
