What is a pond?

A pond is a small body of still fresh water surrounded by land. Some ponds are natural while others are built by people. Ponds form when water gathers in areas that are lower than the land around them. A small pond can be seen in the photo below.

Ponds can be found in many places including forests, open fields or even in someone’s backyard. Ponds are usually shallow. This allows sunlight to reach the bottom of the pond so plants can grow.

Some ponds are permanent. This means they have water all year round. Some ponds are temporary. This means they dry up sometimes.
