What is a mixed fraction?

A mixed fraction is made up of a whole number and a proper fraction. Mixed fractions are also called mixed numbers. Look at the mixed fraction below.

The mixed fraction above is made up of a whole number (three) and a fraction (one half). You can read this fraction as three and one half. You can also read it as three and a half. If you ate three whole cookies and half of another one, you have eaten three and a half cookies. The picture below shows three and a half cookies.

A few more mixed numbers a re shown below. 

Take a look at the mixed numbers above. 

The first mixed number on the left is read as one and two thirds. 

The second mixed number is read as five and three sevenths.
