What is the endocrine system?

The endocrine system is made up of several organs called glands. These glands are located in many different parts of the body. They produce chemicals called hormones and release them into the body. Receptors in various parts of the body, such as organs and tissues, respond to the hormones. Hormones cause changes in certain organs and tissues. In this way, hormones help to regulate different functions in your body.

How does the endocrine system work?

There are many glands throughout the body and each one produces different hormones. The endocrine system works by ensuring that there is enough of each hormone in your body. If the amount of a hormone in your body is low, the gland which produces that hormone will release more of it. When there is enough of the hormone in your body, the gland will stop secreting it. Hormones are responsible for many processes in the body including:

  • growth and development
  • moods and emotions
  • sleep
  • blood pressure
  • metabolism (the way we break down and get energy from food)
  • fertility (the ability to reproduce)
