Prisms

A prism is a three dimensional object with two ends that are identical shapes which are parallel to each other. The two identical ends of a prism are called the bases. There are many different types of prisms. Some of the three dimensional shapes you have studied are also prisms. Look at the pictures below.

More Prisms

Triangular prisms: The bases of a triangular prism are identical triangles. The three other faces are parallelograms such as squares or rectangles. Look at the image of a triangular prism below.

Pentagonal prism: The bases of this type of prism are two identical pentagons. The other five faces are parallelograms. Look at the image of a pentagonal prism below.

Hexagonal prisms: The bases of this type of prism are two identical hexagons. The other six faces are parallelograms. Look at the image of a hexagonal prism below.

Note: The base of a prism can be just about any flat shape including octagons, decagons and more.
